Bio
Evelyn Gracie works with photography as a site of performed identity, embracing the medium´s contemporary role as a tool of self-construction. Drawing from shadow psychology, parts integration and somatic practices, her work reveals the often-concealed aspects of the self that exist beneath the idealised "individual". Influenced by literature and philosophy, she approaches portraiture as an ongoing inquiry into the multiplicity of human experience.
She believes theatre can create realities - through experiments with posture, expression and movement, emotions can be lived out fully during a portrait session. She invites her subjects to view the creation of persona and character play as a space where new ways of being are tentatively embodied.
Evelyn was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she graduated with a BA in Photography.
She has lived, worked, studied and exhibited in Edinburgh, Paris, London, Nairobi and Berlin. She works in both digital and analogue mediums.
